For the first time in many years, Skewen loaded a ship at its dockside.
Destined for Belgium, its cargo of a consignment of steel bales had to be loaded within a very tight time scale due to the tides of the River Neath upon which the dock sits.

In September Skewen scrap metal recycling centre held a training day in end of life vehicle (ELV) depollution for the Environment Agency Wales.
The training was carried out as part of a national campaign by the Environment Agency on improving ELV compliance.

Following a stunt on BBC Television's Top Gear, a 1970's Morris Marina crushed by a grand piano was recovered by Sims Metal Management, Skewen for recycling.
Under the ELV (End of Life Vehicle) Directive, each scrap car must undergo comprehensive de-pollution by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) before the car can be scrapped.
