Consumer goods recovery - WEEE recycling

Assorted WEEE for recycling including vacuum cleaners, microwaves, PCs and heaters

With 35 UK scrap metal sites, and some of the UK’s largest and best equipped processing plants, Sims Metal Management is well placed to offer organisations and local authorities environmentally friendly disposal of domestic “metal” waste and end of life white goods.

The Sims Metal Management mechanical recovery processes are designed to separate and refine metal from domestic waste that is predominantly metallic.  Old lawnmowers, tools, metal furniture and fittings are just some of the materials the business handles on a day-to-day basis.

Our scrap metal depots handle non hazardous and oversize electrical waste such as ovens and washing machines.  We work in partnership with sister company, Sims Recycling Solutions to offer businesses legislatively compliant recycling services under the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) European Directive.

Non hazardous WEEE such as washing machines are processed at most of our UK scrap yards.

However, around 15 Sims Metal Management scrap metal merchants have licenses for WEEE recovery categories:

  • End of life fridges
  • CRT (cathode ray tubes) from computer monitors and televisions
  • IT, media and telecoms such as computer laptops and networking equipment

These three categories of WEEE are transferred to Sims Recycling Solutions for environmentally friendly and legislatively compliant recovery and recycling.

Sims Recycling Solutions uses dedicated processes to recycle more complex electrical and electronic equipment such as brown goods, IT equipment and hazardous electrical and electronic equipment. An example is the world’s largest fridge recycling plant in Newport, South Wales which is capable of handling 1 million fridges per year, de-polluting to standards greater than UK legislation.

Sims Recycling Solutions offers advanced IT asset recovery services for businesses and organisations looking to gain maximum residual value from redundant computers, laptops, telephones, mobile phones and other IT and telecommunications equipment. Options include refurbishment for redeployment or remarketing, dismantling for component and parts recovery or recycling.
