Sims Metal Management recovers and processes 100,000 end of life cars, vans and other vehicles through its UK network of over 20 Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF’s). Our regional hubs containing industrial sized shredders process 400,000 cars a year from the UK network of Sims Metal Management centres and other suppliers. An abandoned vehicles service is available to local authorities. Our aim is to provide a cost effective, environmentally sound and legislatively compliant service.
Tough de-pollution and recovery targets are imposed on end of life cars, vans and other vehicles under the EU’s End of Life Vehicles Directive. Each vehicle must undergo detailed de-pollution by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) before the car can be scrapped. Substances covered in this de-pollution include: tyres, fuels, oils, batteries, anti-freeze and pyrotechnics.
Sims Metal Management has acted proactively by investing in de-pollution technology in order to develop best practice recovery operations. Below is an animation providing information on how this is carried out, plus information on how cars and vehicles are subsequently recycled.

Following de-pollution at an ELV Centre, scrap cars and vans are sent to one of Sims Metal Management's metal shredder sites.
Here they are shred into fragmented furnace feed and transported by road, rail or ship for domestic and international markets. In addition, the process extracts non ferrous metals, either directly or following dense media separation.
The Sims shredder facilities also process hundreds of thousands of depolluted scrap cars from other scrap metal merchant ATFs.

Working with strategic business partnerships, we offer a complete collection service for abandoned and untaxed cars placing them in secure storage, for statutory periods, before they then enter our de-pollution and recycling process.
This partnership strategy also allows Sims Metal Management to offer extensive service coverage for the Abandoned Vehicle scheme, since our partners add to our own comprehensive logistics service.
We have also developed a database system that records and monitors all information requirements relating to the collection of abandoned vehicles and provides automatic updates to key stakeholders.
Sims Metal Management is therefore ideally placed to offer Local Authorities solutions for the growing number of abandoned cars, vans and other vehicles littering our streets and countryside. Find your nearest Abandoned Car Service provider.
Recycleyourcar offers an innovative abandoned vehicle service across the UK. Its aim is to provide a cost effective vehicle collection and recycling service, but more importantly local schemes to reduce the number of vehicles becoming abandoned in the first place. Recycleyourcar operates as a UK wide cooperative network of Authorised Treatment Facilities and aims to also raise the awareness of the requirements for ensuring cars are recycled at the end of their lives.
