Fire crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service had the opportunity to practise their skills in dealing with multiple car accidents at an exercise hosted by Sims’ metals recycling yard in Exeter UK.
Crushed scrap cars and elv vehicles were placed in a simulated road traffic collision with two dummies and seven live ‘casualties’ inside so that fire crews could practice extricating the people within a realistic time scale. The simulated incident lasted an hour during which all the ‘casualties’ were rescued or cut free from the vehicles.
Site Manager, Gary Cleave, said: “The Fire Service attends many accidents, especially during the winter months and accident scenarios vary tremendously. So we were pleased to provide the de-polluted cars so that the fire crews could have the opportunity of practising different accident scenarios. It can only stand them in good stead when they come to dealing with the real thing when quite often it is a case of saving lives.”
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Watch Manager, Paul Vowden, said:
“The exercise was a tremendous success and all those who attended enjoyed practising on a different training scenario. We are very grateful for the assistance of Gary Cleave and Sims Metal Management for providing the venue, vehicles and arranging the accident scenario.”
