BBC news visited Sims Metal Management’s authorised treatment facility for the depollution of end of life vehicles in Camborne, UK. The visit was organised following the announcement that Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is to represent the UK in the 2010 Vehicle Extrication World Cup competition, this September in Ireland.

Fire Crew extricating a person from a car
Throughout the year, staff at Camborne organise training sessions at the site so that fire fighters can practice the cutting and extrication techniques which are used to remove people from vehicles involved in road accidents. The sessions are set up by Camborne Yard Operatives, Scott Harris and Damon Jull, who attend to open the site in their free time.
Site Manager, Malcolm Heath said: “We are very proud to have played a part in Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s achievement in reaching the Vehicle Extrication World Cup. Through setting up as many simulated car accident scenarios as possible, the fire fighters are able to practice their techniques in a wide variety of different accident situations. This can only stand them in good stead when they compete at the World Championships as well as when they attend at real accidents. We wish them all the very best of luck in the competition.”
