Sims Metal Management named UK Best Recycler of the Decade

Sims Metal Management has been named Best Recycler of the Decade by the UK’s leading recycling magazine, Materials Recycling Week (MRW). The announcement was made in MRW’s ‘review of the noughties’ which identified the UK’s top performing companies in the materials recycling and waste management sector between 2000 and 2009.

MRW Editor, Paul Sanderson, said: “Sims Metal Management is a huge global metals and electronics recycling company which has enjoyed a decade of international success. It has made acquisitions all over the world and built a new state of the art WEEE recycling facility in the UK, supporting the UK economy and providing jobs. Sims Metal Management is a true giant in the sector.”

Sims Metal Management’s spokesman, Myles Pilkington said: “We are delighted to have been recognised by the UK’s industry leading title, MRW, as Best Recycler of the Decade. Our company has grown considerably over the last ten years in the UK and overseas, in both the metals and electronics recycling sectors. Our waste electronics recycling and refurbishment business, Sims Recycling Solutions, is now a global operation spanning four continents and continues to grow to meet world demand.

We are also proud of the enormous strides forward we have taken in recent years in the areas of sustainability, health and safety and energy efficiency, all of which have enabled us to operate to the very highest international, environmental, health and safety and legally compliant standards.”

Sims Metal Management is the world’s largest metals and electronics recycler with more than 230 sites across four continents and last year handled more than 13.2 million tonnes of metals and 400,000 tonnes of electronics globally. In the UK, the company has 35 metals recycling facilities including the world’s largest metals shredder, rail link facilities and three deep sea dock operations.

Sister company, Sims Recycling Solutions, operates seven electronics refurbishing and recycling facilities in the UK, including the world’s largest fridge recycling plant and specialist operations for the refurbishment and recycling of redundant computer equipment.

Last year the company opened the world’s largest and most technologically advanced waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) recycling facility in Newport, South Wales. The company’s activities at Newport now cover a 36 acre area and the site is widely regarded as the largest metals and electronics recycling operation in the world.
