Sims Metal Management has been listed as one of the Global Top 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World for the second year running. The list, compiled by sustainable business publication Corporate Knights, was announced at the 2010 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The Global Top 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list identifies companies which consistently demonstrate superior leadership and performance on a range of environmental, social and governance policies relative to their industry peers. Companies on the list are considered better equipped than their competitors to thrive and succeed in the longer term due to the sustainable approach used to manage their business.
Sims Metal Management has 35 metals recycling facilities, three deep sea docks and four railway transportation links in the UK. The company’s 36 acre site in Newport, Gwent, houses the world’s largest metals shredder, the world’s largest fridge recycling plant and the world’s largest and most technologically advanced electronics recycling facility.
Group Chief Executive Officer Dan Dienst commented, “Sims Metal Management's inclusion is testimony to the Company's commitment to, and effective management of, the societal, environmental and governance factors impacting our business. We strive, as in all things, to do the right thing and always with a sense of urgency. Doing good and doing well are not mutually exclusive propositions at Sims Metal Management.”
Other criteria used in compiling the list include ethical and responsible decision making, recognising the interests of stakeholders, respecting the rights of shareholders, and communication with customers, investors, regulators and policymakers. Taken together these factors mark the company out as one of the most sustainable enterprises in the world, both environmentally and in terms of financial performance.
