The Group takes Health and Safety as one of the business’ highest priorities, with dedicated teams operating throughout the UK. Sims Metal Management has achieved an enviable record within the recycling industry with year-on-year reductions across all key performance indicators, operating key sites to OHSAS 18001.
Sims Metal Management runs continuous improvement programmes to develop operations and systems in an effort to minimise its impact on the environment. Accreditation to ISO14001 Environmental Management and ISO9001 Quality Management standards ensure best practice is driven throughout the organisation.

Safety is our number one priority. It is a non-negotiable condition of employment and we are committed to a “zero harm” workplace, where every employee, contractor or visitor will return home in the same condition as he or she arrived.
We operate robust and comprehensive health and safety practices. As you can see from the charts below, we have been successful in significantly reducing lost time injury and medically treated injury rates over the last decade across our 260 global recycling locations.

In Europe, Sims has acheived a 50% reduction in the All Accident Frequency Rate (AAFR) between 2008 and 2010 following introduction of a new health and safety initiative, SimsMMWay. This trend is continuing and Sims is targeted to achieve another 50% reduction between 2010 and 2012.
Each of our four metals shredder sites hold OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management certification.
